Can you do Secret Santa with an odd number of people?

Last updated: 11 October 2026

An odd-sized group does not need a spare participant or an organiser buying two gifts. What matters is that every person has one recipient, every person receives one gift, and nobody draws themselves. Here is how to plan a fair exchange when the headcount is odd.

Why an odd number works

Think of a chain of giving rather than couples exchanging with each other. Alex buys for Blake, Blake buys for Casey, and Casey buys for Alex. All three people give once and receive once, even though nobody forms a two-person pair.

A valid draw does not have to follow one large circle: some groups can form smaller cycles. The examples below use one circle because it makes the principle easy to see. They illustrate valid arrangements, not a prediction of your actual random draw.

Examples for 3, 5 and 7 participants

In each example, read one row as “this person buys for that person”. The last person buys for the first, closing the circle. Each recipient appears exactly once. These are fictional names; do not post your real assignments in a shared group chat.

The three-person case needs care

Three people can take part in CheckMyBasket, but there is very little room for exclusions. If you prevent some participants from buying for one another, you can rule out every valid arrangement. Check the exclusions before drawing and ask the group to agree any change.

Two people exchanging gifts directly is a different arrangement. CheckMyBasket requires three joined members for its draw. If someone withdraws and only two remain, agree a simple direct exchange or cancel rather than trying to force a draw.

Check everyone has joined before drawing

The number of invitations sent is not the number of joined participants. Ask everyone to use the group invitation and check the member list, including accidental duplicates, before drawing names. An absent member cannot be included just because their name was mentioned in the chat.

Set a joining deadline and give people time to add a wishlist. If someone arrives late after the draw, do not casually add them to an existing assignment chain: participants may already have revealed their match or ordered a gift. Speak privately with the organiser about a fair alternative.

Set up your odd-sized group

Use the same create-draw form as any other group. Choose an agreed budget and exchange arrangements, share the invitation, then wait until at least three members have joined. Group size is checked before the draw; there is no need to create a dummy participant.

A final fairness check

Before drawing, confirm that the real participants and exclusions are correct. Afterwards, each person should privately reveal their own match. Keep troubleshooting out of a group thread when it would reveal assignments.

  • Participation is optional and the budget is comfortable for everyone.
  • The joined member list is complete, with no duplicate identities.
  • Exclusions leave at least one valid draw.
  • Everyone has time to buy and deliver one gift.
  • Withdrawals and late joins are discussed before changing arrangements.
